With a symbolic red line between the village of Lützerath and the Garzweiler opencast lignite mine in North Rhine-Westphalia, Greenpeace activists are protesting against the destruction of the village by the coal company RWE. On the L277 highway, they have laid out a 150-meter-long red fabric strip lined with a line of fire. In the middle of the fabric is written "1.5°C LIMIT", on banners can be read "1.5°C means: Lützerath remains". RWE plans to demolish Lützerath in order to expand the open pit mine. In order for Germany to meet its contribution to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees, coal may no longer be mined under this area.
