Shoot: Action against Illegal Timber of Fritz Jäggi in Koblenz

GP09DY
Since 6.00 o'clock this morning, 15 Greenpeace activists stopped a large railway shipment of tropical timber from Africa in Koblenz. The timber was meant for the largest importer of tropical timber in Switzerland; the company "Fritz Jäggi" (FJ). The activists also shut down the sawmill.
The timber trade is rapidly destroying the last remaining primeval forests in the world. Among the Swiss importers of tropical timber FJ, with its annual volume of between 5,000 and 10,000 tonnes of logs , mostly from Cameroon, is the largest importer of tropical timber in Switzerland.
With the one-day stop of the train Greenpeace recalls: Every day more than 35,000 hectares of rainforest are destroyed; an area of approximately 70,000 football fields. Greenpeace requests the company Fritz Jäggi again to get out the trade of unsustainable wood as quickly as possible. The timber trade must start using only FSC-certified wood products. The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is the only certification for sustainable forest management acknowledged by the major environmental and social organizations. Until 1997 the Swiss consumption of tropical hardwood was declining, but since then it is increasing again. The timber companies cut down the most marketable trees without regards to the forest ecosystem and its biodiversity. The uncontrolled exploitation also increases the risk of large fires. According the NGO World Resources Institute the timber industry is the main factor in the destruction of ancient forests. Annually, about 130,000 square kilometers of rainforest are destroyed. Previous measures of the International Timber Trade Organization ITTO, the World Bank and the CBD could not stop the destruction. Greenpeace requests all wood processing companies and the retail companies to refuse wood from ancient forests and to start using FSC-certified products and calls on the company FJ for:
1. Full transparency, in particular the disclosure of the suppliers of the timbere and complete declaration on the type of wood, using method and origin.
2. A letter of intent to gradually get out of the timber trade in illegal timber and to only use FSC-certified wood in the future.
