From December 15th to 17th, 2018, the city of Xapuri, in Acre state, Brazil, held a gathering: "Chico Mendes 30 Years - Memory to Honor, Legacy to Defend", bringing together leaderships from extractivism and social movements from all over the country, not to mention friends and relatives to the activist, murdered three decades ago.
After fighting peacefully for all his life, Chico Mendes left an extensive legacy, including a very successful literacy and learning program for rubber tappers, and the creation of Extractive Reserves (Resex), conservation units for collective use that allow people to benefit from the forests and their resources, like rubber tapping and nut collection, without destroying them.
