Climate Action at the entrance of the 'Ridderzaal' in the Hague, the Netherlands. Greenpeace blocked the main entrance with a truck carrying oil pipes. Delegates of many countries gathered here for the European Energy Charter. The chairman of this meeting was Dutch minister of Economics, Andriessen. According to Greenpeace this European Energy Charter is nothing more than an old fashioned oil-bonanza, with profit as the main goal for oil companies, and the environment as an accessory subject. Large oil lakes have formed in Siberia due to oil leaks in pipes. The oil destroys the environment en pollutes groundwater. Who is willing to invest in technical improvement and modernisation of these installations will not only make a profit by selling the oil that is now leaking away, but will also contribute in the improvement of the environment. The Charter doesn't take account of the consequences of this bonanza for the environment. This plan of Prime Minister Lubbers only creates possibilities for oil companies and does not consider the necessary reduction of fossil fuel.
