The 'Arctic 30' (28 activists as well as a freelance photographer and videographer) were taken off the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise. They had been been held without communication or access to lawyers since Thursday September 19. The 30 people from 18 countries were taking peaceful direct action at Gazprom’s Prirazlomnaya oil platform, to stop the ageing rig from becoming the first to produce oil from the Arctic’s icy waters.
