The Swiss-owned drilling ship, is in port to receive extensive renovations which will allow to mine metals and rare earths in the deep sea in the future. The work is being carried out in partnership with Canadian firm The Metals Company (formerly DeepGreen), who plan at-sea trials in 2022. The protest takes place at the same time, the responsible International Seabed Authority ISA in Kingston, Jamaica, is discussing under which conditions deep-sea mining can start as early as July 2023.
