The heart of the Bulgarian coal industry woke up with the question: "Water or coal?"
On June 11th, exactly a month before the Bulgarian parliamentary elections, more than 13 key locations in the symbolic Maritsa coal basin woke up with the question: WATER OR COAL?
Coal energy production uses huge amounts of water for cooling. In addition, the water in the areas near the coal-fired power plants are regularly in poor ecological condition.
Through this demonstration, the activists aim to remind the need to rethink the importance of water for sustaining life in nature. As well as to introduce the problem of water use in energy in the public debate as another reason for the transformation of energy into renewable sources.
Bulgaria still has not announced a coal phase out date and the future of its coal regions remains uncertain.
