Sponges provide a convenient perch for many animals (such as feather and brittle stars) which allows these commensal associates to reach higher into the water column to catch planktonic prey. The holes within this demosponge can also be used as a nursery for vulnerable baby cidaroid pencil-spine urchins (not shown). Greenpeace is conducting scientific research and documenting the Antarctic’s unique wildlife, to strengthen the proposal to create the largest protected area on the planet, an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary.Locations:Antarctic-Brabant Island-Gerlache StraitDate:27 Jan, 2018Credit:© Christian Åslund / GreenpeaceMaximum size:7012px X 4675pxKeywords:Biodiversity-Corals-KWCI (GPI)-Nature-Protect the Antarctic (campaign title)-Research-Samples-SpongesShoot:Antarctic Ship Tour - Leg One - Photos by Christian ÅslundGreenpeace is on a three-month expedition to the Antarctic to carry out scientific research, including seafloor submarine dives and sampling for plastic pollution, to highlight the urgent need for the creation of a 1.8 million square kilometre Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary to safeguard species like whales and penguins.Related Collections:Antarctic Ship Tour BEST OFAntarctic Deep Sea Specimens
