Action against Swedish Nuclear Waste Transport
Greenpeace activists boarding, for the second consecutive day, the Sellafield Ltd / PNTL's ship "Atlantic Osprey" 18 nautical miles south east of Skagen, Denmark, to protest against the export of Swedish nuclear waste to the UK. After boarding, the ship changes course and heads back towards the Swedish coast. The ship's mission is to carry 4.8 tons of spent nuclear fuel, of which 1.2 kg extremely dangerous "super weapons grade plutonium", to Sellafield. After reprocessing, which will lead to radioactive contamination leaking from the plant, the residual waste will stay in the United Kingdom. Since neither the UK nor Sweden has a repository for this type of waste, Swedish authorities is in practice dumping nuclear waste in the UK – in violation of Swedish law.
