Activists Intercept Coal Shipment in Helsinki
Coal vessel "Alppila" going into harbour in Helsinki.
Greenpeace activists in kayaks occupy the quayside in front of the unloading station at the Salmisaari coal power plant in Helsinki. The Finnish state owned bulk carrier Alppila is attempting to offload its climate damaging cargo, but a total of seven kayaks are between the ship and quayside.
With this action Greenpeace demands the Finnish government to close its oldest coal-fired power plant and start the transition to completely renewable energy just like other Nordic capitals – Stockholm and Copenhagen – have already done.
