Cargo Ship Pallas Burning in Germany

Ship Pallas stranded burning off the German island of Amrum in the North Sea. The ‘Pallas’ lost about 244 tonnes of fuel oil and oil sludge and the environmental consequences were enormous; 26,000 birds were oiled of which at least 16,000 died. For two weeks no one started any cleaning operation.

Der Frachter "Pallas" ist brennend vor der Kueste Amrums gestrandet. Der am 26.10.1998 in Brand geratene Frachter wurde von der Mannschaft aufgegeben und strandete fuehrungslos vor der Insel Amrum. Ca. 244 Tonnen Oel sind ausgelaufen und haben die Straende verschiedener Nordsee Inseln verschmutzt.
