Three scientists, Jason Box, Richard Bates and Alun Hubbard, are working in partnership with Greenpeace. They fit a radar transmitter, receiver and antennas to the kayaks, to obtain valuable data on the processes operating over floating ice shelves. This will reveal more of the complex nature of the ice thickness, basal melt-rates and insight into the breakup at the front section of Petermann. The team paddles the kayaks whilst running the radar, over the carefully selected 25 kilometer course along a meltwater channel which runs down the middle of the glacier's floating ice shelf.Locations:Western GreenlandDate:12 Jul, 2009Credit:© Nick Cobbing / GreenpeaceMaximum size:5616px X 3744pxKeywords:Aerial view-Beauty-Blue-Climate (campaign title)-Cold-Copy space-Day-Glacier melt-Glaciers-Ice-Icescapes-Kayaks-KWCI (GPI)-Nature-Outdoors-Research-Science-Scientists-WhiteShoot:Glaciology Research in Western GreenlandIn summer 2009, the MY Arctic Sunrise sails to the Arctic to document the dire effects climate change has on one of the most fragile environments in the world. Independent scientists use the ship, helicopter, boats and assistance of the crew, to collect data and research the impacts of climate change. During this first section of the three-part tour, scientists conduct important glaciology research on Petermann and Humboldt glaciers in Western Greenland.Related Collections:Best of Arctic Impacts Expedition40 Years Of GreenpeaceAward Winning Greenpeace PhotographyComplete World Press Photo wins to dateSea Ice Minimum (Photo + Video)Petermann Glacier in Greenland40th Auction (All Photographers)Arctic Work Presented at 'Arctic Frontiers' Conference in Norway (Best of)Greenpeace 40th Anniversary Exhibition Images (All Photographers)Arctic Tour 2009 (Photo & Videos)
