Destruction Caused by Toxic Mud Disaster in Brazil
The wreckage that is left of Geraldo Nascimento's home. After living in the district of Paracatu de Baixo for 40 years, his house was hit by a flash flood of mineral waste. Paracatu de Baixo was the second most affected district, right after Bento Rodrigues, and is isolated by the civil defense. On November 5th, a dam containing mineral waste from Samarco (a Brazilian mining company controlled by Vale and British-Australian BHP) collapsed, flooding the region with toxic mud.

Mariana-MG. Foto: Victor Moriyama / Greenpeace.
