For Sale Sign at the Wadden Sea
Greenpeace activists and the Waddenvereniging place huge signs at the Wadden Sea reading 'Te Koop: Waddenzee' with the responsible Dutch Ministers as real estate agents. The text translates to English as 'For Sale: Wadden Sea'. Greenpeace has chosen the following locations for placing the signs; Engelsmanplaat, Wieringen, Harlingen and Lauwersoog. With these signs the joint nature and environmental organizations, united in www.knokmeevoordewaddenzee.nl, protest against the advice of the commission-Meijer, that nature conservation in the Wadden Sea is only possible with the profits of wadden gas. The placed signs are an indictment of sale of the Wad by the Dutch government. Everything seems to indicate that the government will approve the gas extraction in the Wadden Sea, while there is still uncertainty about the possible subsidence as a result of gas extraction. The intention of the government is contrary to international agreements to protect important nature reserves. The Greenpeace action is part of a series of actions and protests to protect the Wadden Sea. Earlier this year they campaigned at a gas extraction pile of the NAM (Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij) at the Wadden Sea.
