Forests Indonesia Tour
A cargo of flitches, slabs of wood cut from tree trunks waiting to be loaded on to the Vietnamese vessel, Ha Tinh 06, on the Kumai River, adjacent to the Tanjung Puting National Park. Greenpeace has evidence that the Ha Tinh 06 attempted to illegally load flitches [squared logs] against Ministerial Decree. The Ha Tinh 06 has been under suspicion of preparing to load an illegal cargo since February the 14th but is now sitting idly in Kumai Bay. The Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior has been patrolling the mouth of the Kumai River, documenting the illegal timber trade. This presence has resulted in an effective blockade, preventing the Ha Tinh 06 loading. The Pangkalan Bun and Kumai area is notorious for illegal logging, operated with power and violence by the timber mafia.
