The darker shade of the cryconite (airbourne dust and impurities carried across the glacier by wind) lower the albedo or reflectance of the glacier's surface, this causes the ice underneath the black parts to absorb more heat and melt much faster than the surrounding ice. A similar example of lowered albedo occurs when sea-ice melts and disappears, causing the darker coloured sea underneath to absorb more heat.Locations:Greenland-Humboldt Glacier-North America-Western GreenlandDate:1 Aug, 2009Credit:© Nick Cobbing / GreenpeaceMaximum size:5616px X 3744pxKeywords:Aerial view-Beauty-Blue-Climate (campaign title)-Close ups-Copy space-Day-Glaciers-Ice-KWCI (GPI)-Nature-Outdoors-WhiteShoot:Glaciology Research in Western GreenlandIn summer 2009, the MY Arctic Sunrise sails to the Arctic to document the dire effects climate change has on one of the most fragile environments in the world. Independent scientists use the ship, helicopter, boats and assistance of the crew, to collect data and research the impacts of climate change. During this first section of the three-part tour, scientists conduct important glaciology research on Petermann and Humboldt glaciers in Western Greenland.Related Collections:Arctic Tour 2009 (Photo & Videos)
