Local Efforts to Map Cancer Cases in Lescout, France
Near the village of Lescout there is a big hen factory farm, currently farming 185,000 hens. Within the community of Lescout, affected by a hen factory farm located only a few hundred meters away, inhabitants complain of smells and noise. At the time the photo was taken, some inhabitants expressed towards Greenpeace France that they suspected the presence of harmful substances in the environment. This map, created by a local resident, is an attempt to collect data on incidents of cancer and cancer-related deaths in the different areas of the village. A cause-effect link between cancer and exposure to substances released by the farm has not been proven. However, according to the map created by local residents, most cases are recorded in the old portion of the village north of the factory farm in the direction of dominant winds while they are less frequent in the new areas further from the farm.

Hen Factory Farm in France
The egg laying hen factory farm of Lescout, Gallès, located a few hundred meters away from the village, is the only industrial facility for animal agriculture of the area and is currently farming 185,000 hens. First built in the 1980s, it steadily grew and was expanded in 2016 to the modern and highly industrial facility it is today. The owner is planning to expand more as a building permit has been requested for a new building. The village of Lescout has only 700 inhabitants. The quantity of hens in the factory farm outnumbers the population of the village by 264 times.
