Oil Free Seas Banners on Muriwai Beach in New Zealand
Greenpeace NZ Programme Director Carmen Gravatt rallies the crowd opposing deep sea oil drilling in New Zealand waters at the 'banners on the beach' event at Muriwai. Similar events are on about 45 North Island west coast beaches and others are happening in solidarity on the East Coast and in the South Island. They have been organised in support of the Oil Free Seas Flotilla which is protesting where oil giant Anadarko intends to start drilling. The site is over 100 nautical miles off the west coast of New Zealand, and in waters around a kilometre and a half deep.

'Oil Free Seas' Banners on Muriwai Beach in New Zealand
The 'Oil Free Seas' flotilla departs Auckland. Banners on boat read "Oil Free Seas." Other boats in the flotilla will depart from Wellington, Kaikoura and Bay of Islands. They will meet about 110 nautical miles west of Raglan where Anadarko is about to start exploratory oil drilling. The flotilla is a coalition of individuals and boat owners who oppose deep-sea drilling and the new legislation that takes away New Zealander's long-standing right to peacefully protest at sea.
