The Jiyeh power station oil spill is an ongoing environmental disaster. The disaster was caused by the release of heavy fuel oil into the eastern Mediterranean after storage tanks at the thermal power station in Jiyeh, Lebanon were bombed by Israeli military in mid July. Fifteen thousand tons of heavy fuel have leaked and sunk into the sea. The spill has caused damage to endangered species and fragile coastal ecosystems on the nature reserve. Greenpeace is in the region to identify and document environmental destruction caused by the Israel-Lebanon War. Along with the terrible humanitarian impacts, long-term environmental damage is an inevitable consequence of war.Locations:Lebanon-Middle East-Palm Island Nature ReserveDate:1 Oct, 2006Credit:© Greenpeace / Pierre GleizesMaximum size:3746px X 2488pxKeywords:Aftermaths of war-Energy-Manual workers-Oil (fossil fuel)-Oil spills-Oiled beachesShoot:Environmental Consequences of the Israel-Lebanon War - 2006Greenpeace is in the region to identify and document environmental destruction caused by the Israel-Lebanon War.
