A tanker unloading crude oil at the Repsol operated La Pampilla refinery was hit by a strong wave following the volcanic eruption in Tonga. The ship lost approximately 11,900 barrel oil just off the coast of Lima. The Peruvian government declared an environmental emergency after announcing that 21 beaches on the Pacific Coast were contaminated by the oil spill.

The ship lost approximately 11,900 barrels of oil just off the coast of Lima. The Peruvian government declared an environmental emergency after announcing that 21 beaches on the Pacific coast were contaminated by the oil spill. Fishermen, that are heavily impacted by the incident, see their livelihood threatened. Some volunteer to clean up the Oil from the beaches. The majority of the clean-up crews are mostly local residents without training.
