Polar bears cannot survive without sea ice, using it to raise their young, to travel and as a platform for hunting seals - their primary food source. This bear appeared to be in healthy condition, however the species is threatened with extinction because climate change is causing its sea ice habitat to melt away rapidly.Locations:Greenland-Kane Basin-North America-Western GreenlandDate:2 Aug, 2009Credit:© Nick Cobbing / GreenpeaceMaximum size:5312px X 3541pxKeywords:Beauty-Climate (campaign title)-Day-Glacier melt-High angle view-Ice-KWCI (GPI)-Nature-Outdoors-Polar bearsShoot:Glaciology Research in Western GreenlandIn summer 2009, the MY Arctic Sunrise sails to the Arctic to document the dire effects climate change has on one of the most fragile environments in the world. Independent scientists use the ship, helicopter, boats and assistance of the crew, to collect data and research the impacts of climate change. During this first section of the three-part tour, scientists conduct important glaciology research on Petermann and Humboldt glaciers in Western Greenland.Related Collections:Arctic Tour 2009 (Photo & Videos)
