2010 World Cup Viewing in South African Village

The villagers of Jericho, 180 kilometers from Johannesburg, gather around a specially constructed solar-powered Public Viewing Area to watch the World Cup matches. Young members of the community have been specially trained by Greenpeace to install and use solar powered systems.
The intervention has highlighted the paradox of an event being held in a country where the majority of its citizens cannot afford to buy tickets to attend. The project is an unprecedented event for Greenpeace Africa, marrying entertainment with education - and proving how solar power has to be the solution for South Africa’s energy crisis.
