Toxic Sludge Flood in Hungary
The rupture of the red sludge reservoir at an alumina plant in western Hungary which caused a massive toxic sludge flood, affecting fields, canals and seven towns near Ajkai, 100 miles (160 kilometers) southwest of Budapest. This sludge, to date responsible for the death of 7 people and over 120 injuries, is highly toxic and contains a mixture of heavy metals.

A massive sludge flood caused by the rupture of a red sludge reservoir at an alumina plant in western Hungary has affected several towns near Ajkai, 100 miles (160 kilometers) southwest of Budapest. A Greenpeace team examined the causes of the toxic spill and its effects on the land, water, and air and have sent samples to two private labs for analysis.
