The action against the Dutch chemical firm Broomchemie, a subsidiary of Israel-based Dead Sea Bromine Group, is to protest against the production of bromine-based flame-retardants. Activists also hang an enormous banner reading 'Hier gemaakt, voor altijd giftig', which translates to English as 'Produced here, toxic forever'. Toxic brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are so-called POP's (Persistent Organic Pollutants). They do not decompose readily or quickly in the environment and they cover long distances in the environment and can be found in household dust, but also at the North Pole. The chemicals end up in the environment during the production, usage and waste phase. They accumulate in the fatty of humans and animals and are often hormone disrupting. Greenpeace wants a ban on the production and usage of these toxics and an obliged change to non-toxic alternatives.
