Russian Authorities Block Greenpeace Expedition in Northwest Siberia - Web Video (German Subtitled Version)
Yamal Peninsula, North-West-Siberia, August 2016: A Greenpeace Russia expedition at the Yamal Peninsula, Northwest Siberia, has faced strong opposition from the local authorities. The team arrived at the region to investigate the impact of climate change on the environment and indigenous life of the Nenets but faced a counteraction: local people who tried to assist Greenpeace with information had received phone threats with even an incident of an indigenous man being detained by the police. Soaring Arctic temperatures have led to an outbreak of anthrax in the Yamal peninsula, Russia, triggered by unusually warm weather and the thawing of permafrost that once covered contaminated cemeteries and animal burial grounds.
