Fire Line in Front of Lützerath Marks 1.5 Degree Limit - News Access
Lützerath, Northrine-Westfalia, 31 Oct 2021: At the beginning of the climate conference in Glasgow (Oct 31 Nov 12, 2021, Greenpeace activists in red overalls mark the "1.5 degree limit" in front of the village of Lützerath in North Rhine-Westphalia.
With a symbolic red line between Lützerath and the Garzweiler open-cast lignite mine, they protest against the destruction of the village by the coal company RWE. On the L277 road, they have laid out a 150-metre-long red strip of fabric lined with a line of fire. In the middle of the fabric is written "1.5°C LIMIT"; on banners you can read "1.5°C means: Lützerath stays". RWE plans to demolish Lützerath in order to expand the open-pit mine.
In order for Germany to meet its contribution to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees, coal may no longer be extracted from under this area.
