Requesting a Public Audit for Nuclear Safety Authorities in Korea
On 7th March 2022, the Greenpeace Seoul office requested a public audit for nuclear safety authorities in Korea, with Ulsan FoE and the local residents, to the board of audit and inspection.
The NSSC(Nuclear Safety and Security Commission), the KINS(Korea Institution of Nuclear Safety), and the KHNP(Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power) all hold the responsibility for regulating the safety of all NPPs in Korea and managing the operations. However, in the process of approving the life extension of Wolsong unit 1, each party violated laws and regulations. If they had taken due processes for life extension, the leakage of the spent fuel storage pool could have been detected earlier.
