Encircling Fish With Dye and Motorboat
Green dye is deployed by crew members of the purse seine fishing boat 'Purple Lilac 888', owned by Frabelle Fishing Corporation of the Philippines, in the process of encircling the purse seine net around a free school of tuna, Papua New Guinean waters. The dye confuses the fish, thus preventing them from escaping the net as it is being set. Then, a motorboat is deployed. The fast action of the motorboat disorientates the fish, thus preventing them from escaping the net as it is being set. Frabelle has committed to shifting part of their operations to the more sustainable 'free school', or 'FAD-free' fishing. Greenpeace is in the Western and Central Pacific ocean on the 'Defending Our Pacific' expedition to campaign for the establishment of a network of marine reserves and an end to overfishing.
