Greenpeace crew from the Greenpeace ships Esperanza and Arctic Sunrise prepare to board the Cairn Energy's Leiv Eiriksson oil rig to demand to see their oil spill plan. Few days earlier the activists had already occupied the rig to stop it from drilling in Baffin Bay, one of the most pristine and fragile natural areas in the world, home to important and vulnerable wildlife. The Leiv Eiriksson is operated by Cairn Energy and is the only rig in the world currently set to begin new deep sea drilling in the Arctic making it a clear and present danger to the pristine arctic environment.
