Research on Fram Strait Ice Floe
A close up of an 'ice core' which has just been extracted from a floe of sea ice. The core section is sawn up and placed in bags. Later the parts of the core are used to date the approximate age of the ice floe. Scientists use the core to tell them if the sea ice was formed in one year or if it has survived many years of melt -so called multi-year ice.
