Damming Activity in Central Kalimantan
The local community along with Greenpeace and local organisations Save our Borneo and the Centre for International Cooperation in Sustainable Management of Tropical Peatland (CIMTROP) at the University of Palangka Raya begin the construction on a community dam to block a canal draining peatlands for plantations in Paduran Village, Sebangau Sub-district, Pulang Pisau Regency, Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia. The province was the epicentre of Indonesia’s 2015 forest fires disaster.
Indonesia's peatlands cover just over 21 million hectares an area smaller than the UK. Yet this small area stores 57GtC, equivalent to more than 6 years of global emissions from fossil fuels.
Peatland drainage causes emissions, leads to fires, and compromises communities.
