In this short documentary Oceans Campaigner Yen Ning speaks about IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) fishing in Taiwan and how to tackle the problem .
In the summer of 2015, Yen Ning from the Rainbow Warrior visited an illegal tuna fishing boat, the Shun-De-Ching 888 (SDC888). Together with colleagues, she discovered the dark side of the tuna fisheries on the vessel.
They found 95 kg of shark fins, which was not reflecting what was on the captain’s log.
This incidence made it obvious that Taiwan’s tuna fishery activities are out of control. The government cannot keep track of the actual captures of fish, and cannot fine the illegal fishing boats heavily enough to stop their illegal activities. The European Commission gave Taiwan a “yellow card” as a warning for not tackling illegal fishing. Taiwan has until March 2016 to get rid of the yellow card warning. Greenpeace East Asia is working closely with academics and other NGOs to push the Fisheries Agency in Taiwan towards sustainable fisheries management through policy work in the country.
