ROV Operations off Deception Island
A Greenpeace team aboard a RHIB use a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to photograph whale bones on the ocean floor, in Whalers Bay, Deception Island, in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica.
Nearby are the remains of a whaling station built by Norwegians in the early 20th Century. The station was abandoned in 1931 after a collapse in the whale oil market.
The Greenpeace ship Esperanza is on the final leg of the 'Protect The Oceans' voyage from the Arctic to the Antarctic. The almost year-long voyage is one of Greenpeace’s biggest ever expeditions and highlights the many threats facing the oceans while campaigning for a Global Ocean Treaty covering all seas outside of national waters.
