The Bear Island (Bjørnøya) is part of the archipelago of Svalbard in the middle of the Barents sea.
The remote island harbors several animal species among which Arctic foxes and seals and is an important breeding ground for migrational seabirds like northern fulmars, guillemots and little auks.
Despite its name, Bear Island hasn’t seen a single polar bear since March 2013.
The enormous animals use ice floes to travel and thereby cover huge distances. Due to receding pack ice in the Arctic, polar bears are losing these transport vessels and are bound to a constantly declining habitat.
