Soya Plantations in Formosa do Rio Preto, Bahia State, Brazil
Soya plantation area in the Cachoeira do Estrondo Condominium. The farm was established in 1975, and has grown to 305,000 hectares - three times the size of New York City. Soya, cotton and corn are grown there, and the farm is composed of 22 enterprises that operate in the agricultural sector. It is a clear example of deforestation aimed for commodity harvesting. More than 118,000 hectares have been deforested since 2000. It also demonstrates how small farmers and the local community have been pushed out with land grabbing, which has been well documented, and the ongoing threat of violence.
