Action for the Hambach Forest in Duesseldorf
Greenpeace activists and climbers are demonstrating today in and outside the Duesseldorf State Chancellery for a political solution to the escalating conflict over the Hambach Forest. The environmentalists call for "Speeches instead of clearing" on banners of North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU). In the coming weeks, the group intends to start cutting down the ecologically valuable forest in order to dredge down millions of tons of climate-damaging lignite. The activists expect Laschet to suspend clearance and clearing until the significant legal concerns about RWE's plans are resolved and the coal commission has completed its work.
