Youth and local community members from Palo and Tacloban in Leyte, Philippines — ground zero for super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) — form the symbol for typhoons that turns into a sun symbol through the use of umbrellas, in an exercise dubbed as “Sinirangan,” the Waray word for both east and for the rising of the sun. The people of Eastern Visayas want to send this visual message as a call for world leaders currently at the climate negotiations in Bonn, Germany, to ensure that impacted communities receive climate justice.
