Toxic Dumping Action in Bay of the Seine
Action against phosphogypsum 'yellow sludge' dumping off north French coast. Phosphogypsum is the gypsum formed as a by-product of processing phosphate ore into fertilizer with sulfuric acid.
The MV Sirius and flotilla fishing boats harassed dump barges containing yellow sludge at the Seine estuary. One dumpbarge was sprayed with paint, occupied and immobilized by activists. The Sirius was arrested by the French Navy and escorted out of French territorial waters.
