Scientific Data Collection in Greenland
A 'mooring' is lowered into Sermilik Fjord by scientists from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. The mooring can later be released from the sea bed by the attached acoustic release device, allowing salinity, temperature and depth data to be recovered the following year. These moorings gather data throughout the year, including the winter period when the fjord is inaccessible due to ice and harsh weather conditions. The Arctic Sunrise and her crew, are facilitating the field work of oceanographers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, in order to calculate the impact of ocean warming on east Greenland's outlet glaciers.
