Twenty-eight Arctic Sunrise crew and two freelance journalists were detained on September 19th by Russian Security forces after a peaceful protest against the Russian oil company Gazprom's plan to start the world's first offshore oil production in the Arctic. They were detained in Russia for over 100 days, and charged with piracy and hooliganism. Finally in late December, the Duma officially adopted an amendment that extends an amnesty decree to defendants who have been charged with hooliganism. Greenpeace International executive director Kumi Naidoo has stated, "The Arctic is melting before our eyes, and these brave activists stand in defiance of those who wish to exploit this unfolding crisis to drill for more oil."
