Greenpeace activists climbed on the cooling tower of the nuclear power plant Leibstadt (AKW Leibstadt) and hung a banner reading in German “KEIN BEDARF” or in English: “NO DEMAND”. Around 60 activists from 8 different countries (Germany, UK, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Switzerland) participated in the action today. They were able to trespass the AKW Leibstadt terrain and enter the nuclear power station to climb on the cooling tower, reactor and chimney. With this action they want to draw attention to the fact that Switzerland is exporting just as much energy as is being generated in the power plant Leibstadt or in the two oldest nuclear power plants Beznau and Mühleberg together. Between 1997 and 2001, the Swiss electricity companies annually exported around 8090 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity. During the same period the AKW Leibstadt produced an average of 8415 million kWh, while the production of AKW Beznau and Mühlenberg together reached 8276 m.
