Ohana Kai Whale Campaign in San Francisco, California, 1977.
The ship, named the Ohana Kai (Hawaiian for "family of the Sea") was the fastest vessel for the whales, ever. A 176-foot WWII sub-chaser for an expedition to confront and document Soviet whale-kills north of Hawaii; the first fully-owned anti-whaling ship in the world. Greenpeace chartered the James Bay as well in Seattle in 1976 for actions against the Soviet whaling fleet. The successful and dramatic expedition, conducted in cooperation with Greenpeace Foundation, encountered and boarded a Soviet whaling fleet 1200 miles north of Hawaii, and was the subject of an ABC television documentary aired internationally.
